Sugar snap peas seeded March 22/20

moved frame over to the right (westward) so can have more space along left edge

2018 was sugar snap peas, cuke on the ground, climbing beans

Last year was cuke, climbing beans, sugar snaps

2020 sugar snaps, cuke, climbing beans

with rotating sugar snaps after cukes, beans requires much more clean up- cukes are easy so space is ready for sugar snaps seeding earlier in the spring.

says thin to final spacing of 2" apart

Frame is 21 ft or 252 inches- packet had 126 seeds- so put 40+ seeds per section =pretty close to 2" apart

Placed a bag of leaves from HG along edge, covered with black poly strip, weighted down with boards. Need to pull back black plastic as is slightly covered over seed right now.

Hopefully this will warm up the soil for better germination.

Optimal germination and growing temperatures may not come until late spring or early summer. In regions where the growing season is short, waiting for optimal soil temperatures may not be practical or realistic. A 70 percent germination rate is often considered both practical and realistic.

Minimum Soil Temperatures for Seed Sowing and Germination:

• 35°F: lettuce, onion, parsnip, spinach.
• 40°F: beet, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, collards, Asian greens, Chinese cabbage, fava beans, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, arugula, radish, Swiss chard, turnip, pea, radish, rutabaga.
• 50°F: asparagus, celery, celeriac, corn, tomato.
• 60°F: bean, cucumber, eggplant, muskmelon, pepper, pumpkin, squash, watermelon.

 Soil Temperature Needed for 70% Germination:

• 45°F: beets, lettuce, parsley, spinach.
• 50°F: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, collards, Asian greens, Chinese cabbage, fava beans, kale, kohlrabi, mustard, arugula, radish, Swiss chard, turnip, pea, radish, rutabaga.
• 55°F: cabbage, corn, Swiss chard, tomatoes.
• 65°F: cucumbers, peppers.
• 70°F: beans, cantaloupe, melons, squash.
• 75°F: eggplant, okra, pumpkins.

Optimal Soil Temperature for Germination (near 100% germination):

• 65°F: parsnip.
• 70°F: spinach.
• 75°F: asparagus, lettuce, onion, parsley.
• 80°F: bean, carrot.
• 85°F: beet, cabbage, eggplant, pepper, radish, Swiss chard, tomato, turnip.
• 90°F: muskmelon.
• 95°F: corn, cucumber, pumpkin, squash, watermelon.

Garlic storage Evaluations March 21/2020

had 14 varieties of garlic stored in the unheated garage in paper bags

Length of storage- evaluations can be based on different criteria

Based on sprouting length
worst in terms of sprouting
Thai, Japanese, Red Russian, German Red, Spanish Roja, MexicanPurple, Italian (surprised at this one)
all of these also the bulbs starting to shrink/shrivel as nutrients used to produce shoots

all the other varieties- do not show any signs of sprouting

Thai-lots of sprouts and long

Japanese- starting to sprout

Rose de Latrec so far not sprouting

Purple Glazer- no sprouts so far

German Red- crop was small- used biggest ones to plant- a bit of sprouting but not on all

Red Russian- starting to sprout on half the bulbs

Bogatyr- no sprouts so far

Spanish Roja- starting to sprout on all bulbs

Mexican Purple - about half of bulbs starting to sprout

German Hardneck- no sprouts

Bogatyr- no sprouts

 Fitzki- some bulbs that were inside all winter- not different from those in the cold

Italian- starting to sprout- was surprised

Thai garlic March 7/20
