March 30/08- snow still on ground, weather cooler than normal, in 07 had done 4 days of fertilizing, this year won’t start til maybe end of this week
Fertilized seedlings with 10-52-10 12.5 ml(1/2 of the iron measuring cup) in 1.89 litres water
Onions are up, with second trimming, asparagus starting, basil, rapini, broccolis, are up big, peppers/eggplants just starting to poke through
Sowed rest of Allysum Saxatile in mushroom bos
Sowed in mushroom box 6 rows of tomatoes, 1 row each of red and yellow pear, 1.25 rows of sweet million and 2.5 rows of brandywine

Planted 5 Lilies cost 8.49 near ramp between potentilla and viburnum at edge of ties. Marco Polo –oriental lily grows 24-36”, bulb size 12-16 cm circumf.blooms july to October , very fragrant. Prefers partial to full shade/plant 1-2 inches deep 8 inches apart

Did seeding flat 20 rows by 10 wide- 2 rows of 10=20- except mints- one row each

April 20/08- chiondoxa blooming in front and in birch bed.witch hazel in bloom, forsythia in bud,
Started big rototiller, couldn’t keep it going

April 25/08 saved tomato seed from assorted pack from grocery, yellow cherry, red grape, orange cherry, exotic (black). Dried seed, sowed them on Sunday Apr 27th into 809 2 seed per section approx
May 1st1 orange and 6 yellow seedlings are up
April 26th dave Jarvis delivered 6 yd load topsoil to back by composter

Rototiller- barely went from shed to by garage then conked out
April 28th- transplanted 4 ft maple from woods to beside Chinese elm
April 29th put 4” potted polfast tomato under water jug and under plastic
Hoppes came and emptied pool (swamp)- new liner is ordered
April 30th hard frost -2 degrees, tomato looks dead, fig leaves touched by frost, even devil’s walking stick buds look like they are touched
May 1st- put roundup on part of drive, some quack grass, gardens
Portulaca is up, asters, Echinacea
Potentilla at back that was moved from ? to behind house is budding, other one looks kaput.

May 24th went to Dubecki’s for fireworks, saw neighbour with mounded garden
Garden 1- angled the rows to right, ends up with a triangular corner garden on left. Moved loose soil from aisle onto bed areas to create a raised bed.
Row 1 –photo degradable plastic cut from 4 ft to 2 ft. planted some pepper, some eggplant, 4 tomatoes
Row 2- full row of pepper
Row 3- planted all the eggplant we had, and some mini pepper. (may 26th bought 2 -1204 of dusky eggplant from Harpers, 1 Italian eggplant Scilian 4” pot, 1 Early girl Tomato 4” pot-had a flower started.

Planted 8 okra from peat pots, one from a plastic 1204 (apparently okra doesn’t like to be transplanted) planted a box of red onion- Red Lucifer eggplant dusky, 4” eggplant
Planted 2 boxes of coleus under locust, 2 boxes under mulberry, 2 boxes under living room window, 1 plant under hydro pole serviceberry

Wed May 28th low of 4, was frost. Some peppers are touched, the odd tomato and eggplant, should recover
Thurs may 29th low of 5, frost again. Didn’t cover, got up at 6 am and watered

June 16th got another load of stone dust for patio area,
Planted a tray of petunias from Mtn gdn near wishing well, also 2 boxes of yellow sweet pepper and a 1 gal miscanthus sinensis.

June 20 transplanted a bunch of the portulacarias, sowed some basil collected plants
Put triangle cloth up with greenhouse frame posts.
Boys gave home depot gift card, got hose reel box $79.00
Put 14 by 14 bird netting over pool for a couple of days this week, seems to have reduce bird droppings or did the baby grackles grow up and leave. Used the hook pegs and string.
Painted the old metal garbage can black with marble effect.

June 22 Helped tim and adelia by cleaning their house- they moved in today\
Okimi Family Picnic- rain threatened all week

June 27th 2 zuchini with flowers, some tomato, pepper and eggplant flowering
Harvested 5 beets planted in new garden, sown april 20th, much further ahead than April 12th ones planted in boxes. I think rosemary spaced these one really well and they grew fast compared to the ones planted in the boxes.

Beans doing well, all the rain, squash and tomatoes are growing.

Pulled out one rapini plant from first crop that not fully dry but before the seeds popped out, hung in a paper bag in garage

1 row of 6 elephant garlic + 2 bulbs of giant garlic (came from a single clove that had on 2 cloves instead of 5-6, so the 2 were very large- will it come out similar?)

Oct 31, john finished pool shed roof, trimmed lower branches of willows, rototilled new garlic bed.

Nov 2/08 warmish,
10 C some cleanup, cleaned bean netting, dug most of carrots, rest of beets, leeks in box are large, in garden quite small.
Moved soil into boxes.
Cooked in oven 2 medium pumpkins2hrs at 400, thinks was too long, 1 hr would have been better. Got 3 bags of about 4 cups each. Looks good, tasted sweet.

Nov 16/08 from Florida planted an organic garlic that Greg bought- no stem (soft neck) only one clove was not soft and rotten, planted along western edge of garlic bed see photo taken today.
